I should explain that a Cascading Style Sheet allows you to “format” the various elements in your document, such as heading, the fonts and colours and sizes etc. This in turn, gives you more control over the overall appearance. Basically, CSS controls the HTML code with respect to these elements of the formatting.

In many ways, a CSS is similar to establishing a style in a word processing or desktop publishing application so that all your major headings will be created in a certain font and at a certain size; your sub-headers in another font, and your body text in another, and so on.
